OVERVIEW

The number of young people using smartphones is on the rise. That means the number of young people accessing the Internet using a smartphone is rising, too. At the end of 2010, our annual website statistics reports through Google analytics showed an increase in the number if people visiting www.asvabprogram.com via their mobile device. In an effort to accommodate those users, we optimized the content for mobile use.

Challenges

Preliminary research revealed that users accessing the site from their mobile device were using a number of different devices (iPhone, Android, Windows, etc). Most mobile frameworks are designed to serve only one type of technology.

The existing website houses an abundance of information, including over 300 career videos. We wanted to make sure we included all of the pertinent information and kept the flavor of the website but did not overload the mobile user. Including all of the information from the existing site on the mobile site would result in slow loading and ultimately loss of audience.

Furthermore, the ASVAB Career Exploration Program presents information to the public as well as information only available to program participants with an access code. We wanted to be able to launch a well-organized mobile version quickly, then determine the need to expand the access code area information once mobile traffic increases.

Solutions

In order to remain consistent with the overall look-and-feel of the existing website, we outlined a variety of ways to organize and present the information. Ultimately, the JQuery mobile framework helped us to optimize the existing website for mobile users. This framework is compatible with the majority of mobile devices. Additionally, it lends itself to further development as the need arises. We will be able to expand the mobile-enabled site to include the ability to log in to the site and access the interactive content in the access code area.

Results

Students, counselors, and parents are able to access the abundance of ASVAB Career Exploration Program material via their mobile devices.
